Bureau, Odishabarta
New Delhi, June 2, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Ganjam District Collector and the Superintendent of Police regarding the alleged custodial death of Sushant Sahu at Kabisuryanagar Police Station.
The Commission acted on complaints filed on May 31 and June 1, 2026, alleging that Sahu died as a result of police torture while in custody. Based on these complaints, the NHRC registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the incident.
In its directive, the NHRC has asked the concerned authorities to submit comprehensive details, including the post-mortem report, a copy of the FIR, the site inspection report, the cause of death, and any available CCTV footage from the police lock-up. The Commission has also sought information on whether a magisterial inquiry was conducted following the death.
The NHRC emphasized that the investigation will determine whether any police excesses led to Sahu’s death. A specific timeline has been set for the submission of the report.
The incident has triggered widespread public outrage, with family members and local residents accusing the police of custodial torture. Subsequently, social activists lodged a formal complaint with the NHRC, increasing pressure on the administration and law enforcement authorities.
The NHRC’s intervention aims to ensure accountability, transparency, and a fair investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sushant Sahu.
