Odisha, 12-05-2026 – The mango export season from Odisha has commenced on an encouraging and confident note with the first international consignment of the year being flagged off from Dhenkanal(Odisha) to London (UK). A total of 3 MT of premium Amrapali mangoes under the guidance and institutional support of the Directorate of Horticulture, Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment (DA&FE), Government of Odisha.
The export was undertaken by Madanamohan Farmer Producer Cooperative Society Limited, DKL Innovative Farmer Producer Company Limited (supported by ORMAS), Kankadahad FPCL.
The entire export process was facilitated by Palladium – the implementing partner for the PSFPO project of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment (DA&FE), with support from the Gates Foundation and active involvement of APEDA and other partner institutions.
The initiative led to a significant improvement in farmer price realisation of approximately 72%.
Senior officials from the Directorate of Horticulture lauded the coordinated efforts of farmers, FPCs, and partner institutions, reaffirming the department’s commitment to enabling farmer collectives to access global markets through structured support and export facilitation.
This first shipment of the 2026 mango selling season builds on last year’s landmark achievement of exporting over 120 MT of mangoes to more than 11 countries worldwide and signals a strong, promising start to the season.
Strategic Export Sensitization Sets the Foundation for Market-Ready FPCs
This early export success is the result of a series of well-sequenced, export-focused interventions aimed at strengthening farmer preparedness and institutional readiness ahead of the season.
As part of this effort, an Export Sensitization Workshop on mango exports through Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) was organised by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment (DA&FE), Directorate of Horticulture, Dhenkanal, and facilitated by Palladium: Make It Possible.
Chaired by the Deputy Director of Horticulture (DDH), DA&FE, the workshop brought together representatives from over 10 FPCs, officials from the Directorate of Horticulture, APEDA, CBBOs, and other stakeholders, creating a shared platform for strategic discussions on export planning, market linkage, and supply coordination. The discussions also covered critical aspects of export preparedness, including SOPs and post-harvest management practices essential for meeting market expectations in both export and organized domestic channels.
One of the key participants from the FPO mentioned:
“For us as a Farmer Producer Company, understanding the technical aspects of marketing—especially the export system—is extremely important. This workshop helped us clearly understand how exports work, what buyers expect, and how we should plan and coordinate as an FPC. Such guidance gives us confidence to prepare better and approach export markets in a more organised and professional manner.”
Export-Oriented Capacity Building Translates Readiness into Action
Building on the momentum created through the sensitization workshop, an Export-Oriented Capacity Building Programme was organised a few days later by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in coordination with APEDA, further deepening farmers’ and institutions’ readiness for the ongoing export season. The programme witnessed participation from representatives of 16 FPCs from Dhenkanal, officials from DA&FE, the Forest Department, OUAT, OLM, Mission Shakti, exporters, and other related stakeholders. Palladium supported the programme through facilitation of a key technical session that encouraged dialogue, experience sharing, and practical understanding of export-linked capacity requirements.
Addressing the participants, Shri Sitakanta Mandal, Regional Head, APEDA, stated that “Capacity building is a critical foundation for successful and sustainable exports. Through programmes like this, FPCs gain the understanding and confidence needed to meet market requirements and engage effectively with buyers. Continuous learning and preparedness are essential for building credibility and ensuring long-term participation in export markets.”
The successful commencement of mango exports from Dhenkanal reflects how a coordinated ecosystem—anchored by strong departmental support, structured facilitation, and active stakeholder participation can deliver tangible outcomes for farmers. The continued backing of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, facilitation support from Palladium as the Technical Support Unit for the PSFPO project, and contributions from partners such as APEDA, KVK, CBBOs and other institutions have been instrumental in translating preparedness into market access.
This collective approach is not only boosting exports and organized marketing but also strengthening farmer livelihoods by enabling better price realization and reduced market uncertainty. Building on this momentum, stakeholders are collectively targeting mango exports of 500 MT and above during the current mango selling season, reinforcing Odisha’s growing presence in global mango value chains.
