Legal Awareness Programme Focuses on Video Conferencing, ICT and Mediation

Berhampur, August 20, 2026: With the objective of making the justice delivery system simpler, more accessible, technology-driven and closer to the common people, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ganjam, organised a legal awareness programme at the Training Hall of the Regional Judicial Academy in Berhampur.

The programme featured detailed discussions on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to make the judicial system more people-friendly, with special emphasis on the role of the Supreme Court’s ‘SUVAAS’ software in making judicial judgments available in regional languages. It was highlighted that AI-based translation of judgments delivered by the Supreme Court in English into regional languages can help the general public understand judicial decisions and legal information more easily.

Awareness and training were also provided on various Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities available in the Odisha High Court and subordinate courts. The programme highlighted how the proper use of digital technology in judicial proceedings can reduce barriers related to time, effort and distance, thereby making judicial services more accessible to the public.

The need for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms and mediation for the speedy and settlement-oriented resolution of disputes was also discussed. Participants were briefed on various provisions of the Civil Procedure—Alternative Dispute Resolution Rules, 2007 and the Civil Procedure—Mediation Rules, 2007, along with their practical applications.

In his welcome address, Byomakesh Nayak, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Ganjam, highlighted the objectives and focus of the programme. Asim Kumar Das, District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of DLSA, Ganjam, urged lawyers engaged in mediation to provide legal services with greater awareness, sensitivity and commitment.

Shubhalaxmi Das, Smita Mahapatra and Anwesha Das, Judicial Magistrates First Class, Berhampur, delivered informative presentations on video conferencing and ICT facilities, Alternative Dispute Resolution and mediation rules, as well as the AI-based process of translating judicial judgments through the ‘SUVAAS’ software.

The programme aimed to promote greater awareness of technology-enabled justice delivery and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms among legal professionals and other stakeholders, while strengthening public access to judicial services.
