Youth Dies Following Altercation Near Pond in Berhampur

Berhampur, June 16, 2026: A tragic incident occurred at around 4:00 PM on Tuesday at the outer edge of Khajuria Ghata Pond in Berhampur city, resulting in the death of a youth following an altercation.
According to police sources, Krushna Chandra Sasmal (28), son of Sibaram Sasmal of Fulta village, and Ai Sania (17), son of Ai Bhaskar of Khajuria village under Gosaninuagaon Police Station limits, allegedly assaulted each other during a dispute.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Krushna Chandra Sasmal had gone to the pond embankment to urinate. Ai Sania, who was present at the spot along with his friends, objected to the act. The objection led to a verbal altercation between the two.
During the ensuing scuffle, Krushna Chandra Sasmal allegedly delivered a fist blow to the face of Ai Sania, following which the latter collapsed and became unconscious at the spot.
Ai Sania was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, in a 108 ambulance. However, the attending medical officer declared him brought dead.
The Superintendent of Police (SP), Berhampur, the SDPO (Town), and other police officers visited both the scene of occurrence and the hospital as part of the investigation.
Police have examined eyewitnesses, and the statement of the accused, Krushna Chandra Sasmal, has been recorded. The exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem examination.
The body has been preserved in the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
In this connection, Gosaninuagaon Police Station Case No. 228 dated 16.06.2026 has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
