World-Famous Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath Draws Over One Million Devotees in Puri

PURI, July 25, 2026: The sacred Grand Road (Bada Danda) of Sri Khetra transformed into a sea of devotion on Saturday as more than one million devotees witnessed the spectacular Suna Besha (Golden Attire) of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Chakraraj Sudarshan atop their majestic chariots.
Held a day after the grand Bahuda Yatra, the revered ritual saw the Holy Trinity adorned with magnificent gold ornaments, including glittering crowns (mukuta), chandrika, golden hands and feet, chakra, and an array of exquisite traditional jewellery. Bathed in the brilliance of the midday sun, the richly decorated deities presented a breathtaking celestial spectacle that left devotees spellbound.
The area around the Singhadwara (Lion’s Gate) of the Shree Jagannath Temple echoed with chants of “Jai Jagannath” as lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad gathered to seek the rare and sacred darshan. The divine sight of Mahaprabhu in His resplendent golden attire filled the atmosphere with deep faith, spiritual ecstasy, and reverence.
Temple servitors meticulously performed the traditional rituals, adorning the deities with sacred gold ornaments, floral garlands, and ceremonial embellishments that symbolize the divine royalty of the Lords. The three towering chariots—Nandighosha of Lord Jagannath, Taladhwaja of Lord Balabhadra, and Darpadalana of Devi Subhadra—stood majestically along the Bada Danda, becoming the focal point of one of the grandest spiritual events in the world.
The 2026 Rath Yatra, which commenced on July 16, has once again attracted an unprecedented influx of pilgrims to the holy city. Despite heavy vehicular movement on the Bhubaneswar–Puri route and massive crowds throughout the day, elaborate security arrangements and efficient crowd management by the Odisha Police, temple administration, and district authorities ensured the festival passed off peacefully and smoothly.
Suna Besha is among the five occasions each year when the deities are adorned with gold ornaments. However, the Suna Besha on the chariots during Rath Yatra holds exceptional religious significance, as it provides devotees the rare opportunity to have darshan of the Lords outside the sanctum of the temple
. According to tradition, witnessing this sacred golden attire is believed to bless devotees with prosperity, peace, protection, and spiritual well-being.
As dusk descended over the holy city, the radiant golden forms of Lord Jagannath and His divine siblings continued to mesmerize countless devotees, reaffirming Puri’s eternal identity as the sacred abode of the Lord of the Universe and preserving one of India’s most cherished spiritual traditions.
