Senior police officers maintain and they more vigilant that the overall crime situation remains under control, with citizens experiencing a comparatively peaceful environment.

During a telephonic interaction on Thursday, a police officer remarked that after the high-profile murder of advocate Pitabas Panda, the lynching of a couple on Giri Road, and the murder of land trader Sudhir Patra at Ambika Nagar, the city has witnessed a significant decline in major criminal incidents.

“When the city remains quiet, it indicates that people are feeling secure. The reduced number of major crimes has also allowed police stations to clear pending investigation files and administrative work,” the officer said.

However, another officer pointed out that routine policing has been affected to some extent because several officers have been deployed outside the district to trace absconding hardcore criminals. Police sources also indicated that certain investigations initiated after June 22 have been kept confidential due to operational reasons.

Several officers proudly admitted that policing has become all the time  demanding needy for public service.

under such stress,” the officer said, adding that the profession has become far more demanding than before.

The Berhampur Police have also been coping with internal strain following the tragic death of a police constable at the Bijipur Police Colony in late June. The incident triggered protests and road blockades by the constable’s family members and local residents, requiring substantial deployment of police personnel to restore normalcy.

Before these developments, Berhampur Police had remained highly active during early June, conducting successful raids against gambling rackets, intensifying action against anti-social elements, and responding swiftly to violent crimes across the city.

Despite the internal challenges, officers from different police stations coordinated effectively to manage both public protests and regular policing responsibilities, ensuring that law and order remained largely unaffected.

Senior police leadership has continued to emphasize preventive policing.

Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) Niti Shekhar and Berhampur Superintendent of Police Dr.Sarvana  Vivek have been personally supervising security measures, including intensified night patrolling, foot marches in sensitive localities, and close monitoring of habitual offenders and anti-social elements.

Police officials said the community-oriented policing initiative is aimed at strengthening public confidence through greater police visibility, improving interaction with residents, and preventing criminal activities before they occur.

The Berhampur Police continue to maintain round-the-clock surveillance at vulnerable locations and remain fully prepared to take necessary measures to preserve peace and public order.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or by dialling the emergency helpline 112.

Police officials expressed confidence that continued cooperation between citizens and the police will further strengthen public safety and contribute to maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in Berhampur.
