Bhubaneswar:As the world is going to celebrate the International Tiger Day tomorrow, wildlife activists and animal lovers across the country has raised concern over the falling number tigers in our country. This year’s theme “their survival is in our hands”, is an alarming message for the humanity as they need our empathy to survive, the activists told.

Nalinikanta Mohanty, an animal lover and an advisor of city based NGO Sustainability Foundation said “we need to change our approach. The number of Tigers, our national animal, is falling rapidly and a day will come when they can only be seen through google images”.

“Therefore, I have put a tiger’s image in the laptop in the photo”, Mr Mohanty lamented.

While the all India results of 2,967 tigers in 2018 compared with 2,226 tigers in 2014 have brought cheer to tiger lovers, the Odisha count remaining static at 28 has become a cause of grave concern as the coastal state has not been able to add a single tiger in four years.

When asked what could be the reason for falling of their numbers, Dr Subhashree Das, an academician and trustee of the organization said, “Poaching is a big threat. We need to have a strong enforcement mechanism to prevent poaching. ”
