Gopalpur Police Arrest Man for Attacking Sister, Brother-in-Law with Iron Kati Over Property Dispute

Berhampur, August 19: Gopalpur Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his sister and brother-in-law with an iron kati (billhook) during a property dispute at Badapur village under Gopalpur police limits.
The accused, identified as Medu alias Rajendra Das, son of Late Sanyasi Das of Badapur, was arrested in connection with Gopalpur PS Case No. 476 dated 19.08.2026, registered under Sections 126(2)/296/115(2)/109/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to police, the incident occurred on August 17 at around 7 PM following an altercation between the accused and his sister, complainant Smt. Narmada Das, over a property-related dispute. The accused allegedly went to her house, abused her and her husband in filthy language and picked up an iron cutting tool lying at the spot.
Police said the accused allegedly attacked Narmada Das’s husband on the head with the iron kati, allegedly with an intention to cause fatal injury, resulting in a bleeding wound. He also allegedly assaulted him on the back. When Narmada Das attempted to intervene, she too sustained an injury to her right hand.
The accused allegedly threatened the victims with dire consequences following the assault.
The injured persons were subsequently provided medical treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.
During the investigation, police seized the alleged weapon of offence, an iron billhook (kati), from the spot.
After prima facie evidence was established, Gopalpur Police arrested Rajendra Das at around 4 PM on August 19 after observing all required legal formalities. He was subsequently forwarded to the Hon’ble Court.
Police said further investigation into the case is continuing.
