Woman Cheated of Rs.4.5 Lakh on False Promise of Marriage; Bada Bazar Police Arrest Accused

Berhampur, August 19: Bada Bazar Police have arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly cheating a woman of  Rs.4.5 lakh after gaining her trust on the false promise of marriage.

The arrested accused has been identified as D. Sunil Kumar Patra (33), son of Late D. Balmiki Patra of Khandrabali under Gangapur Police Station in Ganjam district. He was arrested in connection with Bada Bazar PS Case No. 623 dated August 18, 2026, registered under Sections 69, 318(3) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the 31-year-old complainant, a resident under Bada Bazar Police Station limits, had received  Rs.4,50,000 as compensation from her husband pursuant to a court order.

The accused, who was residing in the same locality, allegedly developed an acquaintance with the woman and subsequently established a relationship with her after making a false promise of marriage.

Taking advantage of her trust, he allegedly obtained her mobile phone password and, without her knowledge, transferred the entire compensation amount from her PhonePe account to his own bank account.

When the woman confronted him regarding the money, the accused allegedly threatened her and also disclosed their relationship to her family members.

Following investigation and establishment of prima facie evidence, Bada Bazar Police arrested Sunil Kumar Patra at 12.30 AM on August 19, 2026, after completing the required legal formalities. He was subsequently forwarded to the Hon’ble Court.

Police said that further investigation into the case is continuing
