Mayurbhanj, Odisha (June 2026): A drunk man poured petrol and  set his mother-in-law and father- in-law on  fire in naupada village, Baripada.

The victims suffered severe burns and were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the accused fled the scene. Shock and outrage gripped Naupada village in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday night after an elderly couple suffered critical burn injuries when their son-in-law allegedly poured petrol on them and set them on fire.

Neighbours rushed to the house after hearing desperate cries and alerted police, but the accused fled the scene.

The victims were admitted to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.

The father-in-law, with nearly 80% burns, remains in critical condition and may be shifted to SCB Medical College, Cuttack. The mother-in-law sustained serious injuries to her hands, thighs, and other parts of her body.

Family members alleged that the accused had a history of violence, frequently assaulting his wife and threatening her parents. He had even attempted to set their house ablaze earlier. On Tuesday, he reportedly parked his bike away from the house, carried petrol, and attacked the couple.

The victims’ daughter and her child, inside another room, escaped unhurt. Locals said the accused often created trouble in the area, allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Police are investigating the case and a search is on to nab the accused son-in-law.
