BERHAMPUR,(30/04/26): Normal life was thrown out of gear across Ganjam after heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm and heavy lightning lashed the district, particularly Berhampur city on Wednesday.
Citizens were gripped by panic as they were not prepared to deal with the situation. Residents of Berhampur town blamed the BeMC for its apathy in repairing or cleaning the drains as most of them were un covered for easy clearance of rain water while drains chock with waste leading to a flood-like situation.
While the roads and many houses were submerged in knee-deep water, trees got uprooted in several places.
The powerful thunderstorm accompanied by more than four hours of nonstop heavy to heavy lightning relentless rain battered Berhampur Wednesday, starting at 5.30 PM to 9 PM onwards bringing normal life to a standstill. The downpour caused widespread chaos as roads became inundated with floodwater, trees were uprooted, and water surged into most households across the city. Power supply was disrupted throughout Berhampur, with electricity remaining cut off .
The heavy rainfall left streets impassable, stranding commuters and residents alike. Uprooted trees further obstructed key routes, adding to the woes of the city. Many low-lying areas saw water logging, with homes flooded, forcing families to scramble to protect their belongings.
In response, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) and district administration swiftly mobilized to mitigate the crisis. Teams were deployed immediately to clear blocked roads, remove fallen trees, and restore normalcy. Their action provided some relief to the rain-hit city, though challenges remained as the scale of the disruption became evident.
