Odisha to Roll Out PNG in Cities, LPG Cylinders to Stay Rural

Bhubaneswar,(02/0/26):Odisha is set for a major energy shift. Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced on Thursday that Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections will be extended to all urban households within the next three months, phasing out LPG cylinders in cities.
Speaking after a meeting with oil companies, Patra clarified that once a household receives PNG, it will no longer be eligible for LPG supply. Both permanent residents and tenants in urban areas can avail the facility, while LPG cylinders will continue to serve rural households.
To curb black marketing, the government will introduce an e‑KYC system, ensuring gas connections cannot be obtained using someone else’s identity. “This move address the challenges of transporting cylinders and the additional 13% expenditure on LPG supply,” Patra said.
The rollout will begin in major cities including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Berhampur, and Puri. The initiative follows directions from the Centre and aims to streamline urban energy distribution while cutting costs.
Officials said the transition to PNG will improve efficiency, reduce misuse, and modernize Odisha’s urban energy infrastructure.
