Youth in Custody for Online Harassment through Fake Profiles

Jharsuguda,;Jharsuguda Cyber Police arrested a 21-year-old youth for creating fake Instagram profiles in the name of a young woman and posting obscene content along with threatening messages.

The accused, identified as Chitrasen Meher alias Chaitu, was apprehended from Balasore district on Wednesday.

Police said the victim, a resident of the Rengali area in Jharsuguda, discovered on May 23 that someone had edited her photos and created five fake Instagram accounts using her name. The accounts carried obscene language and sent threatening messages to her. She lodged a written complaint at the Jharsuguda Cyber Police Station.

Based on the complaint, police registered Case No. 15/2026 on May 24 under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act. Investigators conducted technical analysis and traced the origin of the fake accounts. Digital evidence confirmed the involvement of Meher, who was later arrested.

Jharsuguda SP G.R. Raghavendra said the accused was produced in court after arrest. He added that further investigation is underway to determine if others were involved in the crime.
