Boy Attacked in Berhampur: Chilli Powder Allegedly Used Before Stabbing

Berhampur, June 1, 2026:After a city-wide foot march led by the IGP, SP Berhampur, and police officers from various police stations, along with the recent fifth police encounter that dealt a major blow to habitual criminals, the law-and-order situation in Berhampur had largely remained under control. Crime rates had shown signs of decline, bringing a sense of normalcy to the city.
However, in a shocking incident on Monday evening, a minor was brutally attacked in the Ankuli-Kumbharpalli area under the jurisdiction of Baidyanathpur Police Station.
According to preliminary reports, unidentified minor miscreants first threw chilli powder into the victim’s eyes, rendering him unable to defend himself. The attackers then allegedly stabbed and assaulted him with sharp weapons.
The victim has been identified as Mithu alias Gulla, a resident of the locality.
The Assault
Local residents alleged that after temporarily blinding the victim with chilli powder, the assailants attacked him from behind using sharp blades and other weapons, causing serious injuries.
News of the incident quickly spread across social media, creating concern among local residents.
Police Response
Soon after receiving information about the attack, Berhampur City SDPO Priyanshu Chhotray and Inspector-in-Charge Subrat Beura, along with their team, rushed to the spot. The injured boy was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police Dr. Saravana Vivek M., IPS, stated that there was no reason for public panic and described the incident as a case of personal enmity rather than organized criminal activity.
“We have already blocked all entry and exit points to the city and have launched a massive search operation. The suspects will be arrested soon,” the SP said.
Police personnel have also been deployed at the hospital, where officers are attempting to gather clues from the victim regarding the identity of the attackers and the motive behind the assault.
Baidyanathpur Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter. While the exact motive behind the attack remains unconfirmed, police are examining all possible angles and are confident of making an early breakthrough.
