Wife Allegedly Strangled in Public; Husband Arrested for Attempted Murder at Gopalpur

Gopalpur, 27/09/2026: Gopalpur Police have arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his wife and attempting to strangle her to death at Narayanapur Chhak under Gopalpur police limits.
The arrested accused has been identified as B. Madhab Reddy (42), son of B. Simadri Reddy, of Narayanapur village under Gopalpur Police Station in Ganjam district. He was arrested at around 8:30 AM on September 27 and subsequently forwarded to the Hon’ble Court.
The case was registered at Gopalpur Police Station vide Case No. 559 dated 26.09.2026 under Sections 85/126(2)/296/115(2)/109/351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Allegations of Repeated Harassment
According to the written complaint lodged by B. Dhanalaxmi (31), wife of the accused, she had married Madhab Reddy around 15 years ago according to Hindu rites and they have two children.
The complainant alleged that she had been subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband. She further stated that two cases had previously been registered against him at Gopalpur Police Station and another case at Brahmapur Mahila Police Station, and that those matters are sub judice. She is currently staying separately with her children, according to the complaint.
Two Incidents at Narayanapur Chhak
As per the complaint, on the evening of September 18, while the complainant was at a mobile shop at Narayanapur Chhak, the accused allegedly came there, blew cigarette smoke towards her face, abused her in obscene language and tore her dress.
The complainant further alleged that on the evening of September 25, while she was selling agarbati packets at Narayanapur Chhak, the accused again allegedly abused her, pushed her to the ground, sat on her chest and pressed her neck.
She reportedly became unconscious during the incident and later managed to escape.
Police Investigation
During the investigation, police examined the complainant, visited the spot and examined witnesses. Their statements were recorded under Section 180 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
After finding sufficient material during the investigation, police arrested the accused after following the prescribed legal formalities. The grounds of arrest were also communicated to him in Odia, police said.The accused was subsequently forwarded to the Hon’ble Court.
Further investigation into the case is continuing.
