GOPALPUR / BRAMHAPUR, 23/10/24: A viral social media video depicting a heated altercation between police personnel and a motorcyclist in the Gopalpur Police Station jurisdiction has triggered intense debate across Odisha.

The incident, involving alleged physical assault by on-duty police, has drawn sharp criticism from citizens, political leaders, and social media users, raising serious questions about police accountability and public safety measures in popular tourist hubs.

The Incident and Social Media Backlash

According to reports, the confrontation occurred during a routine Motor Vehicle (MV) checking drive when a young rider was intercepted for allegedly using a mobile phone while riding. What started as a traffic stop quickly escalated into a severe verbal clash between the rider and a lady police officer accompanied by her team.

Footage circulating widely across X (formerly Twitter), Face book, and WhatsApp groups allegedly shows the female officer was soughing which is not looks decent on road  assaulting  and warns with her Index finger(not with proper body language) aiming the rider during the dispute. While netizen consensus broadly agrees that riding while using a mobile phone is a grave safety violation that warrants strict penalties or challans, many have strongly condemned the officer’s physical reaction, questioning the legal and ethical justification of such highhandedness.

Political and Public Reaction; The incident has drawn strong reactions from various quarters:

Political Condemnation: Dr. Lenin Mohanty, Media Coordinator for the BJD, strongly criticized the behavior of the police force, stating:

–The person can be penalized for violating traffic rules, but the police force present there behaved in a manner not expected from Brahmapur Police.

I condemn the way Odisha Police is behaving at Berhampur.

Impact on Tourism: Concerns were raised regarding the treatment of visitors in Gopalpur, a premier coastal tourist destination in Odisha. Critics pointed out that while the state promotes the ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava (Guest is God), frequent aggressive checks targeting tourists under the guise of helmet and mobile phone inspections risk creating an atmosphere of fear rather than hospitality.

Public Trust: Concerns were expressed regarding the effectiveness of the state’s “Ama Police Seva” initiative, with citizens noting that such incidents erode public faith in law enforcement unless senior officials hold errant officers accountable.
