Three Arrested in Sword Attack and Robbery Case in Berhampur
Accused Allegedly Attacked Youth Over Money, Threatened Him With Sword

BRAMHAPURPUR, SEPTEMBER 9, 2026:Badabazar Police in Berhampur have arrested three persons in connection with an alleged violent assault, robbery and sword attack on a 27-year-old youth at Sitaram Sahi under Badabazar Police Station limits.The accused have been identified as Keshaba Panigrahi (23), son of late Kanhu Chandra Panigrahi of Panigrahipentha Ananda Nagar; Aswini Kumar Patra (22), son of Brundaban Patra of Ganapati Nagar 2nd Lane; and Ajaya Behera (20), son of Santosh Behera of Dhoba Bandha Huda, Berhampur.
According to the investigation brief, the case was registered by the IIC of Badabazar Police Station at around 8.30 PM on September 7, 2026, on the written report of the complainant, Anil Mahanti (27), son of Kailash Mahanty of Sitaram Sahi. The IIC subsequently directed the investigating officer to take up the investigation.
Alleged Attack Over MoneyAs per the police investigation, the complainant and the three accused were previously known to each other and had been close friends. However, the relationship reportedly deteriorated due to previous enmity, with both sides allegedly harbouring grievances against each other.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 6 PM on September 6, when Mahanti had returned from work and was standing in front of his house at Sitaram Sahi.
Police said the three accused allegedly arrived on a motorcycle and demanded money from him for consuming alcohol. When the complainant refused, they allegedly assaulted him with fists and blows and abused him in obscene language.
The investigation further alleges that the accused forcibly took ₹700 in cash and a silver bracelet from the complainant.
Sword Attack Alleged(!!!)
The situation allegedly escalated when the complainant protested against the assault and taking away of his belongings.
According to the police version, the accused allegedly took out a sword concealed on the motorcycle and attempted to attack the complainant on the neck with an intention to cause his death.
The complainant allegedly pushed the assailants in an attempt to protect himself, causing the sword to fall to the ground. He sustained injuries during the incident.
Police have seized the sword allegedly used in the incident from the spot after it was identified by the complainant in the presence of witnesses.
The investigation brief states that the nature of the alleged assault was serious and that the assailants allegedly had sufficient knowledge that a sword blow to the head could cause death.
Locals Rescue Injured Youth
The injured complainant reportedly raised an alarm, following which nearby persons reached the spot and intervened.
On seeing the local residents approaching, the accused allegedly fled from the spot on their motorcycle.
During the investigation, police also seized a TVS motorcycle bearing registration number OD-32C-4471, allegedly used during the commission of the offence. The vehicle was seized from accused Keshaba Panigrahi in the presence of witnesses.
Investigation and Medical Examination
During the course of investigation, police examined the complainant and other material witnesses and recorded their statements under Section 180 of the BNSS.
The investigating officer also visited the spot and prepared the spot-related documentation. An injury requisition concerning the complainant was sent to the Medical Officer of City Hospital, Berhampur, for medical examination.
Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, police stated that a prima facie case had been established against the three accused under Sections 308(5), 296, 115(2), 109(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
Three Arrested, Sent to Judicial Custody
Following completion of the required arrest formalities, police arrested all three accused at around 10.30 AM on September 9, 2026.
They were subsequently forwarded before the competent court with a prayer for their remand to judicial custody for 15 days.
Police have also opposed their release on bail, citing the seriousness of the alleged offences and the evidence collected during the investigation.
The case remains under investigation, and the final form/charge sheet is expected to be submitted after completion of the remaining investigative formalities.
The allegations against the accused are subject to adjudication by the competent court.
