Bhubaneswar,03/11/2026:The Government of Odisha is taking continuous steps to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and further strengthen its infrastructure in the state. Under the direction of the Minister of Commerce & Transport, Shri Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, extensive EV infrastructure development work has been undertaken in the state under the Central Government’s PM E-DRIVE scheme.
In the first phase of this scheme, the Central Government approved the establishment of a total of 170 EV charging stations in 7 major cities of the state, and the work is currently underway. Now, in the second phase, a comprehensive proposal has been submitted to the Central Government to set up an additional 290 new EV public charging stations in 13 major cities of the state—Raurkela, Talacher, Sambalpur, Paradeep, Badabil, Balpahad, Brahmapur, Brajrajnagar, Chhatrapur, Jharsuguda, Joda, Kendujhar and Rajgangpur, as well as along various national and state highways.
Notably, among these 290 locations, 68 ‘Wayside Amenity Centres’ of the Tourism Department and 6 other locations along various highways including high-priority Paradeep-Badabil corridor have been included. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been appointed as the Project Implementation Agency (PIA) for the successful execution of this central project. Prior to the final approval and sanction of the proposed charging stations, Shri J K Pattanaik, General Manager, BHEL and team shall conduct a site survey to verify the feasibility and suitability of these locations.
Apart from the central scheme, the Government of Odisha is also setting up more than 500 additional EV charging stations through its own initiatives. Out of these, 24 charging stations have already become operational in Bhubaneswar alone. For the convenience of EV users, the government is also installing EV charging stations at all important points, Atal Bus Stands, and truck terminals across the state. The move marks a key step in expanding EV infrastructure in Odisha. Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly enhance charging accessibility, reduce range anxiety and support the development of a robust EV ecosystem in the region.
Odisha currently has a progressive ‘Electric Vehicle Policy’ (EV Policy) in place. Under this policy, the government is also providing financial subsidies to EV buyers to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles.
