New Delhi:the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Odisha government and Kalahandi police over the death of six people who allegedly died of asphyxiation inside a septic tank in the district earlier this week.

The incident took place on May 26 in Gauda Karlakhunta village of Kalahandi district when masons opened a septic tank for construction-related work. One worker reportedly slipped and fell into the tank, following which others entered it in an attempt to rescue him. They allegedly inhaled toxic fumes and collapsed inside the tank.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, the NHRC said the deaths raised serious concerns regarding violation of human rights and workplace safety.

The Commission has issued notices to the Odisha chief secretary and the Kalahandi superintendent of police, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.

According to the NHRC, the report must include the status of the investigation, details regarding the condition of the injured worker and information on compensation disbursed to the victims’ families.
