Puri,(25/03/26):Two persons were detained by police on Wednesday after drones were spotted flying over the Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s Puri, a prohibited airspace under aviation norms.
The incident came to light in the afternoon when two drones were seen hovering above the 12th-century shrine. Servitors, who noticed the activity while tying ceremonial flags atop the temple, alerted authorities immediately.
Acting swiftly, police deactivated the drones and traced their operators to a building in Mati Mandap Sahi, located around 500 metres from the temple.
The suspects were reportedly flying the devices from the rooftop.
The development triggered concern among devotees and local residents, especially as security has been heightened in the temple area due to the ongoing inventory of the Ratna Bhandar, the shrine’s treasury.
Notably, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has declared the Jagannath Temple and its surrounding area a strict no-fly zone to ensure security. Despite this, instances of drone usage in the restricted zone have been reported earlier as well.
Police are questioning the detained individuals and further investigation is underway.
