Father Arrested  Alleged Sexual Abuse, Blackmail; Woman’s Suicide Attempt Leads to Criminal Case in Brahmapur

Brahmapur,(11/07/26): Saturday Nimakhandi Police in Odisha’s Ganjam district have arrested a 57-year-old man on charges of allegedly sexually abusing and blackmailing his married  22-years daughter, following her suicide attempt by setting herself on fire and remains in critical condition. that brought the matter to light..

A case (No. 220/2026), dated July 9, 2026, was registered at Nimakhandi Police Station under Sections 296, 74, 75, 115(2), 351(2), 64(2)(f)(m), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The FIR was registered at 7:30 p.m. on the written complaint of the Inspector-in-Charge of Nimakhandi Police Station.

The accused, Subhash Chandra Mishra (57), son of Debaraj Mishra and a resident of Bajragumma village under K. Nuagaon Police Station limits, was arrested after the investigation revealed prima facie evidence against him.

According to police, the victim, Raj Laxmi Mishra, married Kaliprasad Mishra in 2025. About six months after her marriage, she allegedly posted messages on social media accusing her father of sexual abuse and harassment. The allegations reportedly led to serious marital discord, following which she became separated from her husband and in-laws.

On the morning of July 9, the victim returned to her in-laws’ residence at Basudev Nagar, 3rd Lane, Berhampur. Police said she locked herself on the rooftop and allegedly attempted suicide by setting herself on fire. She was rescued by her brother-in-law, Ramaprasad Mishra, and was initially admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, where her statement was recorded by Dr. Subrat Kumar Biswal.

As her condition remained critical, she was later shifted to SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, for advanced treatment.

During the investigation, police seized two mobile phones belonging to the accused and another mobile phone connected with the case for forensic examination.

Investigators further alleged that the accused had taken  Rs10 lakh from the victim’s father-in-law before the marriage. When the victim reportedly demanded that the money be returned, the accused allegedly blackmailed her by threatening to circulate objectionable photographs. Police believe this harassment contributed to her suicide attempt.

The investigation has also revealed allegations that the accused subjected the victim to prolonged sexual abuse over a period of time.

The accused underwent forensic medical examination before being arrested and was produced before the court on July 11, 2026.

A scientific team also visited the victim’s in-law residence to examine the scene and collect physical and material evidence.

 Alok Jena, ASP said further investigation into the case is continuing. The allegations in this report are based on the police investigation and FIR. The accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
