Bhadrak: A Class 9 schoolgirl had a narrow escape on Tuesday morning after a petrol attack in the Lanjara Square area under Fatepur Panchayat in the Bhadrak district.
According to her family’s complaint, a 32‑year‑old man from Dharmagatpur village had been harassing the girl for months. When she rejected his advances, he intercepted her on her way to school and allegedly poured petrol on her in an attempt to set her ablaze.
Her terrified screams drew local residents, who rushed to overpower the accused before handing him over to Dhusuri police. The girl’s family later lodged a formal complaint, prompting police to register a case and begin investigation.
Locals revealed the accused had been married twice before, raising further concerns about his behaviour. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with calls for strict action to ensure the safety of schoolgirls.
