Centre Proposes 3-Hour Deadline to Remove Illegal AI Content From Social Media

NEW,Delhi,The Centre has proposed sweeping changes to India’s IT Rules that would require social media platforms and other online intermediaries to remove unlawful AI-generated content within three hours of receiving a valid government or court order.
The draft amendments, released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), also mandate clear labelling of AI-generated content and faster grievance redress to curb deepfakes and AI-driven misinformation.
According to MeitY, the proposals are aimed at tackling the growing misuse of AI-generated audio, video, images and text while ensuring “an open, safe, trusted and accountable cyberspace for users.”
Under the draft rules, the compliance window for removing illegal AI-generated content would be reduced from the existing 36 hours to just three hours. Platforms would also have to label AI-generated content and attach traceable metadata to help users identify synthetic material.
The proposed framework specifically targets deepfakes, AI-enabled impersonation, child sexual exploitation material and non-consensual intimate imagery.
Social media platforms would be expected to use reasonable technical measures, including automated tools, to detect and limit the spread of such content.
MeitY has also proposed reducing the timeline for resolving general user complaints from 72 hours to 36 hours, while complaints involving nudity or impersonation would need to be addressed within two hours instead of 24 hours.
The draft rules have been released for public consultation and may be revised based on stakeholder feedback before being finalised.
