Bhubaneswar, August 17, 2026: In a significant anti-corruption action, the Odisha Vigilance Department today apprehended Dr. Satyajit Behera, Assistant Surgeon at Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, while allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of 30,000 from a functionary of an NGO engaged in assisting unknown and destitute patients receiving treatment at the hospital.

According to Odisha Vigilance, the NGO had been engaged by Capital Hospital to assist unknown and destitute patients coming to the Casualty for treatment. The NGO functionary had reportedly been requesting Dr. Behera since June 2026 to sign the work certificates of employees engaged by the NGO, which were required for processing their salaries for June and July 2026.

However, Dr. Behera allegedly demanded 30,000 from the NGO functionary for signing the certificates. Faced with the alleged bribe demand and harassment, the complainant approached the Odisha Vigilance authorities and reported the matter.

Acting on the complaint, a Vigilance team laid a trap on August 17 and allegedly caught Dr. Behera red-handed while accepting the bribe of 30,000 from the complainant. The entire tainted bribe amount was recovered and seized from his possession.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches are being conducted at three locations linked to Dr. Behera to ascertain whether he possesses any disproportionate assets.

In connection with the case, Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station Case No. 19 dated 16.08.2026 has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended, and further investigation is underway.
