Police Intensify Vigil Ahead of Festive Season
Berhampur, August 25, 2026: In a major crackdown on illegal gambling activities ahead of the festive season, Bada Bazar Police conducted a raid on a gambling den in Berhampur on the evening of August 24 and arrested seven persons allegedly involved in playing cards with betting money.
Acting on specific information received during patrolling, a police team led by SI K. Nayak raided a room on the third floor of a rented building located on the AEM School premises at Kalupatra Street.
According to police, on seeing the police team, the persons present at the spot allegedly attempted to flee. However, the police managed to apprehend all seven persons.

The arrested persons were identified as:

Bidyadhara Sahu (52)
Tungu Kumar Sahu (48)
K. Prasant Kumar Subudhi (49)
Y.M. Kondaya (69)
Narayana Sahu (63)
Krushna Gouda (37)
Police said the accused are residents of different localities of Berhampur.
Rs.3.94 Lakh Cash Seized
During the raid, police seized ₹3,94,150 in cash, along with playing cards, seven Samsung Galaxy mobile phones and five two-wheelers (scooters) from the spot.
The seizure of a substantial amount of cash indicates that betting money was allegedly being used in the card game, police said.
Police Intensify Vigil Ahead of Festive Season
The latest action comes at a time when police are stepping up surveillance against illegal gambling activities ahead of the upcoming festive season, particularly during the period leading up to Durga Puja and continuing through Diwali.
With increased social gatherings and cash circulation during the festive period, police are expected to maintain heightened vigilance against gambling dens and other unlawful activities across the city.
Bada Bazar Police have warned that strict legal action will be taken against persons found organising or participating in illegal gambling activities.
The arrested persons have been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are underway.
