Man Arrested for Attempt to Murder Over Rs.30K. Dispute in Brahmapur; Iron Sharp Kati Seized

Brahmapur, October 9, 2026:Badabazar Police have arrested a 19-year-old youth for allegedly attempting to murder a man during a dispute over a loan of Rs.30,000 in Brahmapur. Police have also seized an iron Kati, allegedly used in the attack.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Taufiq (19), a resident of Khaja Street under Brahmapur Town Police Station limits in Ganjam district.
According to police, the incident came to light after Khalana Sundari Das (36), a resident of Jagannath Bihar, 7th Lane, Brahmapur, lodged a complaint at Badabazar Police Station on October 7, 2026.
In her complaint, she alleged that her tenant, Saira Bhuyan, had borrowed Rs.30,000 and vacated the rented house without repaying the amount. When the complainant approached Saira’s mother to recover the money while taking back the house keys, the latter allegedly called her son, Mohammad Taufiq.
Police said the accused allegedly arrived at the spot, abused the complainant and her husband in filthy language, and attacked her husband, Kuladip Damal, with an iron Kati, targeting his head and neck with the alleged intention of killing him.
Damal reportedly tried to defend himself with his hand and sustained grievous injuries to his fingers, left palm and left arm. He was subsequently sent to City Hospital, Brahmapur, for treatment.
Following the complaint, Badabazar Police registered a case and initiated an investigation. The accused was apprehended from his residence at Khaja Sahi. Police also seized an iron Kati, measuring approximately 15 inches in length, under a proper seizure list.
The accused was arrested on October 7 at around 10:30 PM after completion of the requisite legal formalities and was forwarded to the Court of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM), Brahmapur, on October 8, 2026.
Case Details: Badabazar Police Station Case No. 766 dated October 7, 2026, under Sections 296, 118(1), 109(1) and 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
