Habitual Offender Detained in Extortion, Robbery & Life Threat in Gun Point in Brahmapur

Brahmapur, Sept. 30: Bada Bazar Police have arrested a 41-year-old man allegedly involved in a case of extortion, armed robbery and criminal intimidation, following investigation into a complaint lodged by a local businessman.
The arrested accused has been identified as Rakesh Sethi @ Jam @ Pintu (41), son of Late Rajendra Prasad Sethi, a permanent resident of Putabagad under Chamakhandi Police Station and presently residing in the House Board area near Gayatri Temple in Brahmapur.
Police Said in their release , Rakesh Sethi was arrested at around 11:50 AM on September 29, 2026, and was subsequently forwarded to the Hon’ble Court at Brahmapur.
Notably , alleged Rakesh involved mainly as professional criminal for Extortion and Armed Robbery.
According to the police case, complainant Sudarsana Das , owner of Santosh Enterprises, a puja-materials shop at Bada Bazar Market, alleged that the accused had been demanding money from him as extortion for several years.
Police said that on March 19, 2026, the accused allegedly intercepted Das near the Utkal Cinema Hall junction, snatched the key of his scooter and allegedly dragged him by his collar before robbing him of Rs.15,000 at gunpoint.
Later the same day, at around 6:30 PM, the accused allegedly confronted the complainant inside a nearby shop and took him to his own shop.
He allegedly abused the complainant and demanded extortion money while threatening to bomb his residence and kill members of his family.
Police further stated that on March 31, the accused allegedly sent an associate, identified as Somanath @ Alok Nayak, to the complainant’s shop and continued demanding extortion money over a phone call, accompanied by alleged threats to his life.
Following the written complaint, Bada Bazar Police registered the case and initiated an investigation. The complainant and witnesses were examined and their statements were recorded under Section 180 of the BNSS.
Police said that during the course of investigation, prima facie evidence was found against Rakesh Sethi. He was subsequently arrested after observing the prescribed arrest formalities, and the grounds of arrest were communicated to him in Odia.
Police seized one white-coloured Activa scooter bearing registration number OR-10-G-6020, allegedly used in connection with the crime.
The accused was forwarded to the Hon’ble Court, Brahmapur, on September 29. Further investigation into the case is continuing..
