From fearless crime-branch officers to determined investigators, these actresses proved that women can command the screen just as strongly. Here are five actresses who made an impact with their cop roles.
1. Rani Mukerji – Mardaani
Rani Mukerji’s portrayal of Senior Inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy in the Mardaani franchise remains one of Bollywood’s most memorable female cop performances. As a tough and fearless Crime Branch officer taking on a child-trafficking network, Rani brought grit, intensity and physicality to the character. Her performance helped establish Shivani Roy as one of the most iconic female cops in Hindi cinema.
2. Adah Sharma – Commando and Bastar
Adah Sharma brought a fun yet fierce energy to the role of Inspector Bhavna Reddy in the Commando franchise. Her character was not just a cop on the sidelines — she was action-ready, confident and capable of holding her own alongside the film’s male leads. Her comic timing combined with her action avatar made Bhavna Reddy a memorable part of the franchise. Totally different from her fun and fiery Bhavana Reddy in Commando, Adah Sharma took on a far more intense and gritty avatar as IPS officer Neerja Madhavan in Bastar: The Naxal Story. Her portrayal showcased a darker, more serious side of her acting.
Sanya Malhotra – Kathal
Sanya Malhotra took on a completely different kind of cop role in Kathal. She played Mahima Basor, a young police officer who is assigned to investigate the unusual disappearance of two jackfruits from the house of a local politician. What begins as a seemingly trivial case gradually turns into an investigation that exposes the priorities and politics within the local police system. The film uses humour and satire while following Mahima as she tries to solve the case and establish herself as a serious officer. Sanya’s role brings a relatively understated and grounded take to the female-cop character, without relying heavily on the action-driven style often associated with police roles in Bollywood.
4. Tabu – Drishyam
Tabu delivered a commanding performance as IG Meera Deshmukh in Drishyam. Unlike the action-heavy cop portrayals often seen in Bollywood, Tabu relied on controlled intensity, sharp expressions and sheer authority. Her character’s relentless pursuit of the truth made her one of the most intimidating female police officers in recent Hindi cinema.
5. Priyanka Chopra – Jai Gangaajal
Priyanka Chopra has played police officers in several Bollywood films, taking on characters that have ranged from action-oriented cops to officers dealing with corruption and organised crime. In Jai Gangaajal, she played SP Abha Mathur, a senior police officer who is posted to a politically influenced district and finds herself up against a system where local criminals and powerful figures have considerable control. The role had a more serious and grounded tone, with Abha trying to enforce the law while dealing with resistance from within the police force itself.
Priyanka also played Roma Bhagat, an undercover police officer, in the Don franchise, appearing in both Don: The Chase Begins Again and Don 2. Unlike Abha Mathur, Roma is closely involved in the action and goes undercover while pursuing Don. She also played ACP Shalini, a police officer in Dostana, giving the character a lighter, more commercial treatment. Across these films, Priyanka has portrayed cops in very different settings, from undercover investigations and action sequences to tackling corruption within the police system.
