Five Arrested in Rs.1.50-Crore Government Job Fraud Case in Brahmapur

Brahmapur, August 24, 2026: Baidyanathpur Police have arrested five persons in connection with an alleged large-scale job fraud involving cheating of more than ₹1.50 crore from unemployed youths and their families on the promise of securing government jobs.
Baidyanathpur Police Station registered Case No. 287 dated June 6, 2026, under Sections 319(2), 318(4), 335, 336(2), 336(3), 338, 340(1), 340(2), 351(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a written complaint lodged by Manoranjan Mahanty.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly cheated the complainant of Rs.1,50,50,498 by assuring him that government jobs in different departments could be arranged for unemployed candidates.
The complainant allegedly collected money from aspiring candidates and transferred funds to the DBS Bank account of Jagadish Kumar Behera, maintained at the Esplanade Branch, Bhubaneswar, through his Axis Bank and HDFC Bank accounts. In addition, ₹98 lakh was allegedly handed over in cash to Jagadish Behera in the presence of witnesses.
The accused persons also allegedly collected and retained the original educational certificates of several candidates.
During the investigation, police recorded statements of the complainant and other affected candidates under Section 180 of the BNSS. Police also seized alleged fake job offer and joining letters of different organisations, money receipts and records of online financial transactions.
Five Accused Arrested
Jagadish Kumar Behera (39), son of Kumuda Chandra Behera, Segidi Street, Gopalpur, presently residing at Rajarani Apartment, Sandha Chhaka, Gopalpur.
Banita Behera (36), wife of Jagadish Behera.
Ajit Panda (24), son of Himansu Sekhar Panda, Marada village, Puri district, presently residing at Palasuni, Rasulgarh, Khurda.
Sisir Kumar Mishra (54), son of Sankarsan Mishra, Naladia Sasan, Kendrapara district, presently residing at Rahama Railway Station Colony, Jagatsinghpur district.
Litu Swain (26), son of Swarbeswar Swain, Jatani Balichaka, Mundia Sahi, Khurda district.
All five accused have been apprehended, relevant documents have been recovered, and they have been forwarded to the competent court.
Police said that further investigation is underway to identify other possible victims, trace the flow of the cheated money and ascertain whether additional persons were involved in the alleged job fraud.
Police Advisory
Police have appealed to citizens, particularly unemployed youths and their families, not to pay money or hand over original educational certificates to private individuals or agents promising government jobs.
Job seekers have been advised to verify recruitment advertisements and appointment offers only through official government websites and authorised recruitment notifications. Any demand for money in exchange for a government job should be treated as suspicious and reported immediately to the nearest police station or through 112.
