Two Suspected Thieves Caught, Beaten by Villagers, Handed Over to Police in Borigaon

Kukudakhandi,(Borigaon)July 28: Two persons suspected of attempting to commit theft were caught by villagers, allegedly assaulted, and later handed over to the Nimakhandi Police in Borigaon under Kukudakhandi block of Ganjam district on Saturday night.

According to local sources, residents of Borigaon had been on alert following a series of thefts reported in the village over the past few days. Complaints regarding these incidents had already been lodged at the Nimakhandi Police Station.

Late on Saturday night, three unidentified persons allegedly attempted to break into a house in Kali Mandir Sahi. Alert villagers noticed their movement and tried to intercept them. While one of the suspects managed to escape, the remaining two were caught by the villagers.

During questioning, the detained suspects allegedly confessed to having committed a theft earlier the same night at a shop in nearby Mahulpalli village, where they reportedly stole cash along with cigarettes, gutkha, and other items. They also admitted to attempting another theft at a house in Kali Mandir Sahi but failed after local residents gathered at the spot.

The incident triggered anger among the villagers, who allegedly assaulted the two suspects before handing them over to the Nimakhandi Police.

Santosh Sahu, a member of the Borigaon Samiti, said the suspects were later sent by the police for medical examination and treatment. He also stated that Borigaon had witnessed several thefts in recent days, including at the houses of Uday Sahu, Saheb Sethi, and Tuna Gowda, creating fear among residents.

The injured suspects are believed to be residents of the Sahanipur area. Police have taken both individuals into custody and launched an investigation into the theft allegations as well as the identity of the third suspect who escaped.

Further investigation is underway.
