Bhubaneswar,(08/07/26):The Odisha Police is grappling with a severe manpower shortage, with more than 33,000 posts lying vacant across different ranks, Director General of Police YB Khurania said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters in Cuttack while responding to questions on the resignation of Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Mena, Khurania said the state’s police strength is inadequate for its growing population.
“If you look at the population-to-police ratio statistics, Odisha ranks very low. Because of that, they have to work much harder compared to other states to maintain effective law enforcement and public safety,” the DGP said.
He said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has recently approved the creation of 17,000 new police posts. Along with around 16,000 existing vacancies, the total number of posts to be filled has now reached 33,000.
Khurania expressed hope that the Uniformed Services Recruitment Board would begin the recruitment process at the earliest to fill the vacancies and strengthen the state’s policing capacity.
He added that increasing manpower is crucial as Odisha modernises its police force and improves public service delivery. Filling the vacant posts would enhance operational efficiency and ensure better policing in both urban and rural areas, he said.
