Jajpur ;The Sukinda BJD on Saturday Protest the ‘Nari Adhikar Abhijan’ campaign, seeking 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats by delinking their reservation from delimitation. Addressing a function held on the occasion at Duburi Under Sukinda constituency In Jajpur District ,.
Former Minster Priti Ranjan Ghadei said reservation should now be given to women based on the current number of Lok Sabha seats without linking it to the Delimitation Bill.
“The BJD had in 2023 fully supported the Women’s Reservation Bill,” he added. Coming down heavily on the Centre over the issue, Ghadei said the BJD has always fought to ensure the rights of women and will continue to do so in the future as well. Stating that the rise in atrocities against women in Odisha over the past few years is extremely worrying, the he said BJD is taking forward the campaign started by former chief minister Biju Patnaik to empower women.
Referring to the murder of a pregnant woman in Hinjili recently in front of her three-year-old child, Ghadei said women have become increasingly insecure and are being deprived from getting their rights under the BJP government.
“Biju babu had history of implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in panchayati raj institutions which was increased to 50 per cent under the BJD government,” the Ghadei said. Stating that the BJD had given 33 pc seats to women in 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he said, “Empty vessels are now making much noise.” People who have done nothing for women are now making big claims, he added.
the President of Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) Ipsita Sahu Said “The entire country witnessed how the BJP convened a special session of Parliament and attempted to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill by linking it to the delimitation Bill.
After facing setbacks, the BJP is now trying to convene special sessions of Assemblies to level false allegations against Opposition parties.” She said that all political parties in the country, including BJD, had supported the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in 2023. She accused the BJP of being the only party that didn’t want to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill until there was an increase in seats in Parliament and Assemblies.
Former MP Sharmista Sethy , said during the tenure of Biju Patnaik as chief minister in 1992, Odisha became the first state in the country to reserve 33 per cent seats for women in the three-tier panchayati raj system. She said that during Naveen Patnaik’s rule, around 80 lakh women in Odisha were empowered through Mission Shakti. “Hence, calling BJD anti-women is absurd. Although the Nari Shakti Vandan Act was passed nearly three years ago, instead of implementing women’s reservation, the BJP is organising public outrage rallies, which reflects its double standards,” she maintained.
