NESCO Contract Workers’ body threatens stir against layoff

Jajpur: The NESCO Contract Workers’ Association, Jajpur has threatened to resort to agitation against the announced layoff of contract employees working under Tata Power Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL)
The association Jajpur alleged that the power distribution company (DISCOM) is arbitrarily resorting to mass layoffs of contract employees while a huge number of posts in various positions are lying vacant in the DISCOM.
“The contract workers have beeen working for last 15 to 20 years continuously for 12 to 14 hours a day on low monthly wages. The announced layoff of the contract employees is illegal,” said association president and labour leader Vidyadhar Mohanty.
He said that if the layoff notices are not withdrawn before May 31 in all the divisions under Jajpur circle, the association will go on an indefinite strike at the district headquarters.
Association general secretary Ranjan Kumar Ojha, treasurer Jyoti Prakash Parida and working president Chandan Sahu urged the contract employees not to get depressed and assured every possible effort to restore their livelihood.
