BERHAMPUR,(19/12/2025): With the police busy in checking the entire city violations, criminal activities in the city have witnessed a steep rise. In Hillpatna locality of the city, a trader was murdered during a robbery at his office-cum-residence on June 13. The victim, 66-year-old Lambodar Muni, a distributor of milk products was strangulated to death with a towel by the miscreants who decamped with cash worth Rs 6 lakh and gold ornaments weighing over 110 gm. His body was found by a customer the next day.

The police managed to arrest three of the culprits and also recovered Rs 4 lakh and 98 gram gold ornaments from them. However, two of the accused are still at large. Since the robbery was committed at a prime locality, the police acted swiftly.

However, in several cases of snatching, burglary and theft little has been done to bring the perpetrators to book.

Locals said lack of police patrolling has emboldened anti-social elements in the city.

The city police has 20 motorcycles but they are seldom used for patrolling. The release of several criminals has emerged as a cause of concern for the locals and police in the city. Sources said several criminals have started reorganising their gangs for committing offence.

Young Woman Murdered by Lover in Berhampur Lodge, Later Surrenders Before Police

 In a another dramatically murder on 2nd July,25;  a young woman murdered by Lover in Berhampur Lodge

The woman has been identified as Priya Kumari Moharana, while the accused is Abhaya Kumar Moharana (24), a resident of Lanjipalli area here, police told.


A man allegedly killed his lover after inviting her to a lodge in Odisha’s Berhampur town and later surrendered to police, officials said on Wednesday.

According to police, Abhaya checked into a lodge near the New Bus Stand around 11.30 am on Tuesday. Priya arrived a little later. The couple spent some time together before Abhaya allegedly stabbed her 20 times around 3 pm, resulting in her death.

Following the incident, the accused went to City Hospital for treatment of an injury on his hand. From there, he went to Gosaninuagaon police station and surrendered, police said.

Enraged over Priya’s decision to marry another person, the accused killed her in the lodge, police claimed.

According to police, Abhaya dumped both their mobile phones in a pond near Bijipur area of the city.

In a another case during july due to  Old Rivalry Leads to Brutal Murder  of a young man, Vidyadhar Panigrahi of Laxmi Nrusingha Sahi, was brutally murdered in Jagabandhu Sahi, Badabazar, Brahmapur. He was allegedly abducted by a group of assailants while returning home with friends and attacked with weapons. Critically injured, he died during treatment at MKCG Medical College. Police suspect the murder stems from past animosity and have launched an investigation.

Again on 6 oct 25, Senior advocate Pitabas Panda was shot dead by unidentified miscreants outside his residence in Baikuntha Nagar of Berhampur on Monday evening.

According to sources, two bike-borne miscreants fired at Pitabas Panda and fled the spot before anyone could identify them. Following the firing, he was rushed to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in a very critical condition. However, doctors who attended him at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival.

The mishap while the exact cause of the firing at Panda is difficult task for Baidyanathpur Police staff in absence of Inspector-in-Charge later under stood she was on leave.(!).

 Finally the staff reached the crime spot and started an investigation into the matter.

It is to be noted here that Panda was a member of the Odisha State Bar Council. His brutal murder has shocked and surprised everyone in the area.
