Tusker Found Dead in Ganjam Forest; Electric Trap Suspected

Forest officials recovered the carcass of an adult tusker

Berhampur: Forest officials recovered the carcass of an adult tusker on Saturday morning from Compartment No. 6, Baniapalli Reserve Forest, under Mujagada Range in Ganjam’s North Ghumsar Division.

Divisional Forest Officer Himansu Sekhar Mohanty and Ranger Bimbadhar Sahu inspected the site. A team from the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Berhampur, is en route. Preliminary probes indicate death occurred two days prior, possibly from electrocution via a poacher’s trap targeting wild animals.

A Joint Task Force from Bhubaneswar will conduct the post-mortem later today. The incident underscores escalating human-elephant conflict in the area, following a recent fatal elephant attack on a youth in nearby Balatun. Authorities have intensified anti-poaching patrols.
