Berhampur: In a major medical achievement, doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur successfully operated on a 50-year-old farmer suffering from a rare spinal cord tumour.

The patient, Baidya Nayak from Andirakancha village in Rayagada district, had been unable to walk for three months due to numbness and weakness in his legs.

After visiting several hospitals without improvement, Baidya was referred to MKCG in August. A team of five doctors, led by Dr Rabinarayan Panda, Head of the Neurosurgery Department, performed a complex three-hour surgery and removed a four-inch tumour from his spinal cord.

Doctors diagnosed the condition as Hemangioblastoma, a rare tumour that affects movement and can lead to paralysis if not treated in time. In Baidya’s case, the tumour had already caused severe mobility issues.

Thanks to the timely surgery, Baidya’s condition is now stable. He is under observation and expected to be discharged next week. This marks a proud moment for MKCG’s neurosurgery team, which now adds thsi rare spinal surgery to its list of successes.
