Ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki Takes Oath As Nepal’s Interim PM; Fresh Polls Within 6 Months
Kathmandu: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister on Friday, becoming the first woman to lead the country.
The oath-taking ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan ended days of political uncertainty following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli amid mass Gen Z protests.
President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath in the presence of Vice President Ram Sahay Yadav and Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Rawat.
Soon after the ceremony, the Office of the President announced that Nepal will hold general elections on March 5, 2026.
Karki’s appointment came after a consensus between President Paudel, Nepal Army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel and Gen Z leaders.
The youth-led agitation against corruption and unemployment had gripped the nation for days, leaving at least 51 people dead in police action and ultimately forcing Oli to step down.
