Rayagada(11/07/25): Remember a true story of a love marriage between a tribal girl & a dalit boy in Kashipur ? Forty family members of the girl got tonsured in the plea of tradition and culture.

This time it is a painful love story between a boy and a girl from a same tribal clan & lineage from a village named Kanjamjodi of Sikarpai gram panchayat in Kalyan Singhpur block, which is adjacent to Kashipur block. The boy named Laka Saraka fell in love with his paternal aunt(Aataa or Piusi) named Kodia Saraka and eloped from the village.  According to the local tribal tradition no marriage ceremony will be solemnised among same tribal clan & lineage.

The village community aka a Kanaroo Court called both of them and resolved to punish them according to the tribal tradition. Both of them were severely thrashed and taken before the village deity. After worshipping the village goddess, both the boy and the girl were forced to carry a yoke on their shoulders and plough the field like oxen. Then they were told to leave the village. Nobody knows their whereabouts after they were forced to leave the village in haste.

“This is really painful to witness such acts of mediaeval age during this digital modern time. During nineteenth century and earlier, Kondh communities, particularly Dangaria Kandhas, in the name of tradition, were used to perform human sacrifice before their deities during particular festivals. This was vehemently suppressed by the then British Raj. These type of inhuman punishments and coercion by cast and clan systems need to be legally contained as such acts violates rule of law”, said some social activists of the district.
