Rayagada, 15 June: Come rains and Kashipur gets frequently infested with water borne diseases like diarrhea and cholera. For years, villagers have been dependent on streams and open sources for drinking water, thereby consuming contaminated water with some cases even resulting in hospitalisation and death. Taking this into account, Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a unit of Hindalco Industries under the Aditya Birla Group, has taken a significant & sustainable step towards ensuring access to safe drinking water in remote areas of Odisha.
As part of its commitment to community welfare, the company inaugurated two Swajal water supply projects and five solar-powered tube wells in Kaliacanchera and Rayalaghaty villages under Kodipari Panchayat of Kashipur block.
The inauguration ceremony was facilitated by Vijay Chauhan, Mines Head of Utkal Alumina, along with officials from the company’s CSR department. These projects aim to address the long-standing issue of lack of safe drinking water in the region. The projects will now provide safe drinking water at the doorstep of villagers.
While diarrhea has spread in the developed districts like Jajpur, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Keonjhar leading to deaths, the residents have expressed immense satisfaction and gratitude. “People of our village have long suffered due to the lack of clean drinking water, especially during monsoons when natural water sources get polluted. Now, for the first time, we will be able to drink safe water, thanks to Utkal Alumina’s initiative”, said Malia Majhi, a local resident. This initiative is part of Utkal Alumina’s broader effort to improve the quality of life in surrounding communities through need-based, sustainable, and people-centric interventions.
