Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: CM Majhi Highlights Odisha’s Vision to Join India’s Top 5 Economies by 2047

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Wednesday that the state aims to become one of India’s top five state economies by 2047, coinciding with the nation’s centenary of Independence.

Speaking at a joint business session between the Ministry of External Affairs and Odisha during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention, Majhi underlined the state’s ambitious economic vision.

He highlighted India’s rise as the fifth-largest global economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, stating, “Odisha aspires to be part of this journey. From our current $100 billion economy, we aim to achieve a $1.5 trillion economy by 2047.”

Majhi said Odisha is preparing for this transformation by focusing on future-ready sectors such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, petrochemicals, textiles, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. He invited investors to capitalise on Odisha’s abundant resources, including its 480-km coastline, virgin forests, Asia’s largest saltwater lake, and rich cultural heritage.

Promoting the upcoming Utkarsh Odisha business summit, the Chief Minister added, “We are laying the foundation early to make Odisha the preferred FDI destination in India.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, addressing the event, stressed the importance of trade, technology and tourism (3Ts) in India’s foreign policy. Linking Odisha’s historical connection with Southeast Asia through Bali Yatra, he said the state plays a key role in the Centre’s Mission Purvodaya, aimed at rejuvenating eastern India.

Jaishankar also pointed towards Odisha’s immense tourism potential, calling it the “biggest employment generator” and urging NRIs to invest in the state’s growth story.

Odisha Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain highlighted the state’s commitment to ease of doing business, citing initiatives like the ‘Go Swift’ single-window system. He reassured investors of transparent governance and a skilled workforce, saying, “Odisha is a trusted partner for global business and a hub for entrepreneurial growth.”

The event marked a significant step towards strengthening the state’s ties with the diaspora and attracting investments to propel Odisha’s economic transformation.
