Odisha Wins Best State Award at 2023 National Water Awards

New Delhi: Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday conferred the 5th National Water Awards 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan. Odisha emerged as the winner in the Best State category for its remarkable achievements in water conservation, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in sustainable water management.

President Murmu, during her address, praised the winners for their exceptional contributions to water conservation, highlighting that these efforts serve as a blueprint for future generations. She also lauded the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s initiatives, particularly the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aligns with the goal of providing clean drinking water to all citizens. President Murmu emphasized that achieving a “water secure India” will require a collective effort from the government and citizens, advocating for the installation of rainwater harvesting structures in every household.

Odisha’s impressive water conservation record includes the creation of over 53,000 rainwater harvesting structures and nearly 11,000 rejuvenated traditional water bodies. The state has also developed over 68,700 watershed projects and 10,800 recharge structures. These initiatives are setting a high standard for other states, and their recognition at the national level further encourages widespread participation in water conservation.

Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Paatil congratulated Odisha for its first-place win, acknowledging the state’s efforts as an inspiration for the rest of the country. He mentioned that such awards foster a healthy competitive spirit, pushing stakeholders across India towards the vision of a “Jal Samridh Bharat.”

The 5th National Water Awards also recognized other outstanding contributors, including districts and institutions. In the Best District category, Balangir from Odisha’s East Zone stood out for constructing 260 farm ponds, 170 check dams, and 1,320 water harvesting structures, further cementing Odisha’s role in championing water sustainability.

As Odisha leads by example, its recognition at the National Water Awards highlights the state’s commitment to securing the country’s water future while encouraging others to follow in its footsteps.
