Centre Declares June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to Commemorate Emergency
New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that June 25 would henceforth be observed as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day). This date marks the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Shah’s declaration highlights the suffering endured during the Emergency, which he described as a period when democracy was stifled.
In a statement on X , Shah emphasized the significance of this day, noting that it would honour those who faced severe hardships during the Emergency. “On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced,” Shah tweeted. The decision by the BJP-led NDA comes on the 49th anniversary of the Emergency, as the party counters the opposition’s accusations of constitutional subversion.By observing ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas,’ the government aims to ensure that the lessons from the Emergency period are remembered and that the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy are honoured.
