Thousands of Devotees Stranded as Badrinath Highway Closed Due to Landslides

Dehradun: The national highway to Badrinath Dham in Uttarakhand remains closed for over 48 hours due to two major landslides in Chamoli. Thousands of devotees are stranded because of these landslides.

A landslide at Patalganga occurred at the mouth of a tunnel on the Badrinath National Highway on Wednesday. Parts of the tunnel were damaged leading to the highway closure.

The highway was cleared and opened at Patalganga on Wednesday morning. It is closed near Joshimath because of a landslide that blocked the Patal Ganga Langsi tunnel.

The landslide has snapped road communication to Badrinath, Joshimath, Niti, Mana, Tapovan, Malari, Lata, Raini, Pandukeshwar, and Hemkund Sahib.

Over 2,000 pilgrims heading towards or returning from Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib remain stranded on the highway.

In total, over 260 roads are closed in Uttarakhand due to rain and landslides. Chardham pilgrims have been warned in view of a heavy rain alert in the region.
