Rayagada, August 24: Vivekananda Sharma, IPS, Superintendent of Police of Rayagada goes one step ahead. Though he moves to Dangasil, Kashipur to officially inaugurate the new building of a police outpost there, he invites the local school children to join with him in jointly inaugurating the outpost under Doraguda police station. So, this time, it is neither his bureaucratic nor his political boss doing the job. He instils an aura of confidence among the tribal school children, especially the girls. Not only he cuts ribbon alongwith the school girls, but also lights the lamp jointly with them. He even created a child friendly conducive atmosphere by making two tiny girl children sit on the chair meant for the Police Sub-Inspector.
In this whole process of socialisation & coming closer to the people under the aegis of Ama Police Samiti, Sharma was assisted by his colleagues namely S Senapati, SDPO, Rayagada, Kiran Bala Samal, IIC, Doraguda, Bibi Bag, IIC, Tikiri, Aswini Kumar Pattanaik, IIC, Andirakanch. Kashipur Block Chairman Kantha Majhi, Utkal Alumina’s CSR General Manager Niharika Sahu and other villagers, who joined the inaugural meeting, applauded effort of Sharma.
“One can theoretically lecture about police-public interface; but actualising this concept into action is a challenge. It needs lots of courage, humiliation and value base to despiral the fear syndrome generally prevalent in people’s psyche. Sharma’s thoughts of shaping the minds of the young from an early stage will certainly go a long way. As the top cop of the district, Sharma has been exemplary and shown the way to his colleagues & others to follow”, said Shyam Sundar Das, a jubilant youth leader of the district & son of a retired police officer.
Sharma is also very much concerned about the plights of tribals in Niyamagiri hills. A year back, he moved with the District Collector to the last interior village of Niyamagiri named Lakhpadar and drank local porridge made out of ragi millet. He did not stop at that. Recently he went to a village named Jarapa inhabited by Dangaria tribes in Niyamagiri hills to feel the local issues by being with them and assess their felt needs. He sat on the dusty varendah in this tribal habitat, took a baby in his lap and discussed about their livelihood issues. He even kept this photo in his DP.
When this correspondent asked Sharma to send a brief write-up or press release about above two incidents where he was personally involved, he simply avoided by messaging “Self praise is no praise at all”. But when again pestered, he just wrote two informative lines about both the events.
“It is not always combing operations or hauling of convicts though these are very much needed to sustain rule of law & peace in the society. Our action, at times, may project a negativity in people. But every police man sees a human angle of any issue and proacts. This trend is increasing and people of Rayagada district are generally law abiding and recognise the role played by the cops. We need to work together to strengthen the existing development processes and strive hard to do away with the development deficits”, opined Sharma.
