WOMEN GET 33-PERCENT JOB-RESERVATION IN PUNJAB CIVIL SERVICES BUT WOMEN-RESERVATION IN LEGISLATURE STILL A DREAM FAR AWAY.

DELHI:It refers to welcome decision of Punjab government providing 33-percent women-reservation for jobs in Punjab Civil Service. The state has already33-percent women-reservation in village-panchayats and civic-bodies. Many other states have already affected women-reservation in civic bodies and village-panchayats with Haryana having 50-percent women-reservation in village-panchayats that too with some minimum educational background to avoid elected women acting as proxy of their husbands or other family-members.

Need is to implement some such decisions at national level. Many political parties cry for reservation on man-made aspects like religion and cast evidently for vote-bank politics, but oppose reservation to women which still remain dominated section of society created by nature in our male-dominated political system. Even Islamic world including Pakistan and many other democratic countries have adopted Women-Reservation in legislature.

Election Commission formula to make it compulsory for every political party to give at least 33-percent party-tickets to women may be immediately enforced as an interim measure. Moreover to prevent wives or other relations being misused as proxy of male politicians, there should be a system whereby name or photo of husband or any other relation may not be permitted in election-campaigns of women candidates. There should be uniform 33-perecent reservation for women at all stages from civic bodies to Parliament that too with some stipulated minimum educational background. It is regretting that invalid votes are also found in elections to posts of President and Vice President where only elected representatives vote.
