UGC Sets Up Fact-Finding Committee to Probe Nepalese Students’ Suicides at KIIT

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of two tragic student suicides within months, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a high-level fact-finding committee to investigate the deaths of two Nepalese students at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar. The panel is expected to submit its report within 10 days.

Headed by Prof. Nageshwar Rao, former Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, the committee has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths and recommending measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

UGC Secretary Manish Joshi confirmed the constitution of the committee and stated that its mandate extends beyond fact-finding—it includes evaluating institutional policies, student support mechanisms and adherence to welfare regulations.

This move comes after 20-year-old Prisha Sah from Nepal was found dead in her hostel room on Thursday night. The incident reminds bitter memories of the recent case involving another Nepalese student, Prakriti Lamsal, who died by suicide on 16 February this year at the same university.
