TALCHER THERMAL POWER STATION (TTPS) IMPLEMENTS RASTRIYA ABHISAR ABHIYAN BY SELECTING TEN GOVERNMENT MIDDLE SCHOOLS
NTPC Talcher Thermal Power Station has started a drive to bring in qualitative improvement in the school education in its peripheral villages on part of its CSR initiative. In this regard, 10 government middle schools have been identified for implementation of RastriyaAbhiskarAbhiyan(RAA) activities. The government schools are the focus because many children from unprivileged sections of the society receive education in these schools.
The idea of the whole program is to make learning joyful and bring in improvements in the classroom transactions. This program will enable children to become motivated and engaged in Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) through observation, experimentation, inference drawing, model building, rational reasoning and testability. This approach of teaching will also create curiosity, excitement and exploration among school children in Science, Mathematics and Technology and will create a culture of thinking, inventing and doing to promote enquiry based learning in schools. The program will also facilitate achievement of learning levels appropriate to the class of study in Science, Mathematics and assist teachers in demonstrating experiments and conducting activities.
Teacher’s training is an important component in this program. The teachers from selected schools would be equipped with latest tools (Computer simulations, Audio / Visual content) and techniques (latest research on child psychology and pedagogy) used in teaching. The effectiveness of the program would also be measured through national level competitions like NTSE and children science congress.
The Kothari Commission (1964) noted that the destiny of this country is shaped in the classrooms and laboratories of schools, colleges and universities. India’s Curriculum Framework recognizes connecting knowledge to life outside the school and notes that learning takes place both within school and outside school and seeks to design learning tasks beyond textbooks and schools. The Yashpal Committee report (1993) ‘Learning without Burden’ expressed concern over the esotericisation of Science also on the tendency embedded in the syllabi and textbooks to accelerate children’s mathematical skills by teaching mechanical rules at the expense of understanding. NTPC Talcher Thermal has engaged UNISED (Unit of Science &Educational Development ) which is a society of IIT–Kanpur Alumni/Student/Educationist for implementing the School Learning Improvement Program. UNISED has started installing the hardware in the 10 selected schools from today onwards. NTPC Talcher Thermal Power Station is engaged not only to supply power to the people of Odisha but also think about to care and share the responsibilities of its periphery regarding the development of education, health and rehabilitation under its CSR initiative programs said Group General Manager DebendranathTiwari.
