Stampede At Goa Temple Leaves At Least 7  Dead, Over 30 Injured

Goa: A tragic stampede at Shirgaon temple in Goa claimed at least seven lives and left over 30 injured during an annual festival last night. Thousands of devotees had gathered for the Lairai Devi jatra, a grand procession for Goddess Lairai, which draws visitors from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

Eyewitnesses described a sudden rush around 4-4:30 am, triggering widespread panic. Reports suggest overcrowding and poor crowd control may have played a role. Some devotees had gathered around a ritual fire, believing that participating in certain customs—like walking over embers—brings good fortune. However, it remains unclear whether people were engaged in these practices at the time.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that an electric shock might have sparked the chaos, though authorities are still investigating the exact cause. Emergency services were immediately alerted, and rescue efforts were launched. Among the deceased is a 17-year-old boy.

The injured were rushed to Goa Medical College and North Goa District Hospital, where additional doctors were deployed. Mr. Sawant visited the hospitals and assured that every possible measure is being taken. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and wished a swift recovery for those affected.

A 24/7 helpline has been set up for medical emergencies—dial 104 for assistance. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed that hospitals are fully equipped, with 10 advanced ambulances deployed to help those in need.
