RED ALERT – LOW PRESSURE LIKELY TO INTENSIFY OVER BAY OF BENGAL INTO CYCLONIC STORM IN ODISHA

BHUBANESWAR:The people of coastal Odisha may face another disaster by end of this week amid COVID-19 crisis as weathermen predict possibility of a Cyclonic Storm wwith heavy to heavy rainfall hitting the coast of Odisha.

Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director of the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC)  said, ” The system has developed into a well marked low pressure area and is intensifying. It may cross Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast towards May 18. The cyclonic storm is likely to hit Odisha coast by end of the week”.

The Cyclonic Storm may hit Odisha coast between Ganjam and Puri or Kendrapara and Balasore or may touch Odisha-West Bengal border, he predicted.

The Regional Metrology department has announced Red aletr to five districts i.e.Puri,Gajapati,Ganjam,Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur from

Friday.

The Low Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal  and adjoining south Andaman Sea has developed into a well-marked low pressure area.

It is very likely to concentrate into a Depression over central parts of south Bay of Bengal from today (May 15), the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department said.

The Depression may further intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over the same region by next evening. It is very likely to move northwestwards initially till May 17 and then re-curve north-northeastwards towards north BoB on May 18-19.

In association with the above system, the conditions are also becoming favourable for advance of southwest monsoon over south BoB, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands around May 16.

Under the influence coastal Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with heavy falls at a few places on May 18 and heavy to very heavy falls at a few places next day.
