RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Meets FM Nirmala Sitharaman Days Before End of His Tenure

New Delhi: A day after presenting the bi-monthly monetary policy, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday.

This meeting was just before the end of the extended term of the incumbent RBI Governor. Das’s three-year extension concludes on December 10. In 2021, the government announced a three-year extension of Das’s tenure, a month prior to the end of his original term.

According to sources, Das visited the Finance Minister in the evening in New Delhi.On Friday,

Das, a career bureaucrat-turned-central banker, was appointed as the 25th Governor on December 12, 2018, following the abrupt resignation of Urjit Patel.

With the year extension granted to him, Das is now one of the longest-serving RBI in the institution’s 90-year history.the RBI opted for a status quo on interest rates for the 11th consecutive time, amid increasing calls to address the slowdown in GDP growth, which was reported at 5.4 per cent for the September quarter.

While unveiling the bi-monthly policy, Das clarified that the RBI has been operating within the flexibility provided by its statutes and that its objective is to maintain strict control over inflation.

Over the past six years, Das has faced numerous challenges, including Covid-19 and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

He has been recognized as the central banker of the year for two consecutive terms at international forums for his adept management of the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
